Energizing radiance
the sun
Sunlight has many positive effects on us. The most important of these is the promotion of the body's own vitamin D production. Our skin produces vitamin D through exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV radiation). Among other things, this helps to maintain bones, muscle function and the immune system. Many studies also show that low vitamin D levels can have a negative impact on mood. In winter, less vitamin D is produced due to weaker sunlight, which can lead to so-called winter depression. This is characterized by increased listlessness, tiredness and depression in the cold months. Older people in particular are often affected and should consider supplementing with the vitamin.
Where there is light, there is also shadow
Many people like to lie in the sun to get a beautiful, tanned skin. However, too much or too intense sunlight can also be harmful. Excessive exposure to the sun's UV rays can lead to skin damage, including skin cancer and premature skin ageing. Anyone who spends long periods outside in the blazing sun during the hot summer months should think about sun and UV protection. This is especially important for people with fair skin types, who are particularly prone to sunburn.

Tanning - protective mechanism of the skin
The tanning of the skin when exposed to intense sunlight is actually a protective mechanism of the body. UV radiation causes the skin to produce the dark color pigment melanin. This is intended to protect the cells from harmful radiation.
However, this natural sun protection of the skin has a maximum sun protection factor of 4. The protective effect is therefore very low. This is why you should always use sunscreen or avoid the sun on days of intense sun exposure.

Tanning and UV protection capsules
Protection from the inside
Instead of sun creams that work from the outside, there are also products that can help you tan and provide UV protection from the inside. Tanning and UV protection capsules are based on the active ingredient beta-carotene - an orange pigment found in carrots, for example. If you consume large amounts of beta-carotene over a longer period of time, it is said to intensify the tanning of the skin. Other carotenoids such as lutein and lycopene can also act as tanning enhancers. At the same time, carotenoids also act as antioxidants and can therefore protect the cells. Copper is also a popular ingredient in tanning capsules, as the mineral contributes to normal skin pigmentation.

Cell protection - the cornerstone of longevity
Cells have their own cell protection and detoxification mechanisms. They produce and store both oxidizing and reducing endogenous substances for this purpose. Their task is to neutralize free radicals - reactive substances with an unpaired electron. If there is an imbalance between oxidizing and reducing substances in the body, which overtax the capacity of the natural cell protection mechanisms, our cells can be damaged. This is also known as oxidative stress. This is said to lead to accelerated cell ageing and contribute to the development of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. For a long, healthy life, you should therefore make sure you consume enough antioxidants in your everyday life. These are found particularly in fruit and vegetables (e.g. spinach, grapes, carrots, apples). Of course, supplementation in the form of food supplements is also possible. Popular antioxidants in supplements include grape seed extract with proanthocyanidins, quercetin, glutathione, vitamin C and vitamin E.
